Cat sick – low body temperature – rat poison!

Rattengift Gefahr für Katzen

We had a topic in the Telegram group about a sick cat that had a low temperature.

A kind soul gave a hint that there was a new type of rat poison with an active ingredient which, when ingested by cats, causes the body temperature to drop too low and leads to illness.

Due to the long-term effect and the subsequent death of mice and rats, it can possibly also occur by eating the still agile animals. In most cases, the dose in rats and mice is probably too low to kill a larger animal if they are eaten by a cat. But in the case of frequent and constant ingestion by a high poisoned population of rats and mice, it can also be different, as reported in the chat.

Following this tip, I researched the subject and found this regarding rat poison and low temperature:

New rat poison with the active ingredient alpha-chloralose can greatly reduce the body temperature of cats. The body temperature drops to ambient temperatures, which can lead to the death of the poisoned animal.

The normal body temperature of a cat is between 38.5 and 39 °C. In the case of poisoning with alpha-chloralose, the body temperature can fall below 38 °C.

Cats that have ingested rat poison can show symptoms such as trembling and a body temperature well below 38 °C. In our case, it was only 35 °C! In our case it was only 35 °C!

If a cat suffers such poisoning, it is important to take it to a vet as soon as possible to receive treatment. However, it is important that the vet is aware of this.

So there are new dangers lurking for cats that many vets are not even aware of. It is therefore important to disseminate this information.

All love

Sebastian
